COTABATO CITY – The Army brokered a peace settlement on Tuesday between two Moro Islamic Liberation Front commanders, ending a decade-long clan feud in Maguindanao del Sur.
Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, said the rivals agreed to abandon violence and settled their territorial and personal disputes diplomatically in Ampatuan town.
“To show they are sincere in embracing peace in front of us, they turned in high-powered firearms on top of their promise not to resort to violence anymore,” Catu told reporters here.
The commanders, identified as Maki Dumpao and Datu Baks “Sangki” Kindo, surrendered nine high-powered firearms, including two caliber .50 homemade Barrett sniper rifles. They swore on the Quran to abide by the agreement.
The warring families last clashed on December 10 in Barangay Timbangan, Shariff Aguak. Catu warned that the Army would not hesitate to use force to protect civilians if violence recurs.
Maj. Gen. Vladimir Cagara, 6th Infantry Division commander, lauded the families for choosing peaceful dialogue. (PNA)
