MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur — The Bangsamoro government has started the construction of a 150-unit resettlement housing project in Barangay Malimono as part of efforts to provide permanent housing for internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the 2017 Marawi siege.
The project, funded through the Bangsamoro-Marawi Rehabilitation Program (BARMM-MRP) and implemented by the Ministry of Human Settlements and Development (MHSD), includes land development works and targets families still living in temporary shelters or without permanent homes.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held May 24 and attended by officials from the Bangsamoro government, local government units and project partners.
BARMM-MRP Program Manager and Member of Parliament Said M. Shiek said the project is part of the regional government’s continuing rehabilitation and resettlement efforts for displaced families.
“While the national government is doing its best to rehabilitate Marawi, we are also implementing sustainable support, just like this housing resettlement project, to fulfill our mandate as an IDP-centered program,” Shiek said.
Shiek also linked the project to the Bangsamoro government’s “Moral Governance” agenda.
“Alhamdulillah, we are witnessing the positive impact of our continuous efforts through the BARMM Government,” Shiek stated. “What we need now is unity and continued support for good governance—supporting what is right and beneficial for the community, and rejecting what causes harm or division.”
MHSD Minister Zaide C. Ali said the ministry remains committed to ensuring the implementation of housing projects across the Bangsamoro region.
“As for us, public servants from MHSD, we remain committed to ensuring the successful implementation of all housing projects in the region. We conduct regular monitoring and site visits of these projects to resolve problems that our contractors may encounter during construction,” Ali said.
Prior to the groundbreaking, MHSD inspected housing and resettlement projects in the municipalities of Maguing, Tubaran, Masiu, Butig and Lumbayanague, as well as Marawi City, to assess project implementation and identify causes of delays.
Malimono Barangay Chairman Mohammad Zia-ul Haq Naga welcomed the project and thanked the Bangsamoro government for selecting the barangay as a beneficiary.
“This project will greatly improve our community here in the Islamic City of Marawi. We sincerely thank you for your continued support and for trusting our barangay with these vital programs,” he said.
According to the BARMM government, the initiative ensures that families affected by the Marawi siege will have safe, stable, and sustainable living conditions. (APB/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur with reports from BARMM-MRP)
