CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The local government of Opol in Misamis Oriental province will implement a speed limit on major highways this year to prevent accidents.
In a radio interview on Friday, Mayor Jay Bago said the new ordinance stipulates that the speed limit on national highways will be at 60 kilometers per hour (kph).
“Before the implementation, we will conduct an information and education campaign so the public will know of the new rules,” he said. Signages will also be placed on highways to remind motorists of the speed limit.
Nearby El Salvador City already passed an ordinance in November 2024 for a 60 kph speed limit (from 80 kph) on national highways and 20 kph on streets, roads, boulevards, and bridges.
The ordinance was passed less than two weeks after two high school students died while three others were injured after their pickup truck crashed into a trailer truck.
The driver of the 10-wheeler truck said the pickup, driven by one of the two students who was only 15, suddenly appeared on their path. (PNA)
