CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – To explore methods for improving the Philippine food system through the use of science, technology, and innovation, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Mindanao Cluster and the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) convened on May 8–9 at the Mallberry Suites Business Hotel as part of the 46th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM).

The theme for this year’s event, “Beyond Farm Productivity: Transforming the Philippine Food System to Address Equity, Consumer Health, and Environmental Issues,” according to Jaime C. Montoya, president of NAST PHL, emphasized the necessity of decentralizing mechanisms that are currently in place to improve farm productivity and achieve agricultural and rural development.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said that this event is grounded on the DOST strategic pillars, including the promotion of human well-being, wealth creation, wealth protection, and sustainability which allows to support Filipino farmers including community outreach programs, partnerships, technological applications, and information campaigns aimed at helping farmers helping sell their produce and improve their livelihood.

Engr. Elpidio M. Paras, co-chairperson of the Regional Development Council-10, said, “It is also very important for Mindanao as a whole considering that we posted the biggest share in the total value of crop production, equivalent to 42.2 percent.”

“Northern Mindanao’s economy has experienced significant growth over the past year, with a 5.3 percent increase and a P49.5 billion rise from 2022 to 2023,” he added.

This showcased the economic growth that northern Mindanao had produced in the past two years. 

Engr. Romela N. Ratilla, regional director of DOST-10, presented the programs and projects in the Mindanao cluster, while Dir. Luningning E. Samarita-Domingo, director IV of NAST PHL, presented the NAST programs and activities, highlighting initiatives and progressive opportunities for outstanding individuals.

Acd. Eufemio T. Rasco Jr., chair of the Agricultural Sciences Division of NAST PHL, focused on the three national plans, which are the National Agri-Fishery Modernization and Industrialization Plan, the Philippine Development Plan, and Pagtanaw 2050.

Salient features of the food system vision and plans were also highlighted, which recognized and addressed the interrelationship of production and consumption in the food system.

“I think it starts with a commitment to equity. To ensure that every Filipino has access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food regardless of their income or background,” said the Chief Executive Officer of Bambuhay, Inc., and the Executive Member of the National Innovation Council, Mark “Sultan” D. Gersava.

Gersava also emphasized that beyond farm productivity lies a world of possibility. In this world, food serves not only as a commodity but also as a source of nourishment, connection, and resilience.

The two-day event includes five plenary sessions that offer comprehensive recommendations for addressing issues such as low income among farmers, diet-related chronic diseases, and environmental deterioration. (MGAB/PIA-10)
