MAMBAJAO, Camiguin — The Department of Education (DepEd) Camiguin and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-10 conducted a news writing and social media workshop for school information coordinators from December 9 to 10, covering style guides and DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) monitoring.
The two-day workshop taught participants practical skills in presenting clear, balanced, and accurate information on DepEd programs, while strengthening the use of standard writing styles and basic oversight processes.
PIA-10 Information Officer Recthie Paculba emphasized that government workers must produce news and content that show the public how agencies deliver services and respond to community needs.
“Importante kaayo nga makabuhat ta og balita ug content nga makita sa katawhan nga naglihok ug nagtrabaho ang mga taga-gobyerno,” Paculba said.
(It is important to produce news and content that people can see, showing the government at work.)
Paculba said responsible storytelling promotes transparency and helps citizens to understand government initiatives, while careless or negative framing can breed mistrust and weaken public confidence.
“Dili na makumpleto ang proyekto kung wala kahibalo ang komunidad nga naa tay ginahimo para sa kabatan-onan,” she added, underscoring the role of information in building trust.
(Government initiatives will not be complete if the community does not know that we are doing something for our youth.)
Gabriel Andres, PIA-10 information officer, discussed social media content creation, urging schools to maintain visible, credible, and reliable online platforms while upholding the agency’s commitment to timely, relevant, and accurate information.
“Our social media pages reflect our credibility as a government agency,” Andres said, noting that accuracy and timeliness mirror integrity and commitment to nation-building.
DepEd Camiguin Information Technology Officer Elson Jamero presented key points of the DepEd Manual of Style, which guides writing standards for official documents and digital platforms.
Jamero also organized selected participants into a division information team that will coordinate with PIA to release updates and services for learners and stakeholders.
Participant Cel Marie Abregana said the training boosted her confidence in writing news and managing school social media pages, citing hands-on exercises as especially helpful.
“Our training was engaging and enlightening. I learned techniques I can apply immediately in my work. I now feel more confident in writing news and creating social media content for our school,” Abregana said.
