CAMIGUIN – Camiguin Water Company (CWC) is taking decisive steps to modernize the island’s water infrastructure to prevent an impending water crisis and ensure reliable access to clean water for all residents.
According to General Manager Jonathan Sarsonas, these upgrades are critical to addressing the growing demand and outdated systems that threaten the island’s water supply.
“We are implementing comprehensive modernization efforts to safeguard Camiguin’s water supply,” Sarsonas explained. “Before CWC began upgrading the system, many areas faced inconsistent water access, and the infrastructure was at risk of failure. Our goal is to prevent a water crisis by replacing old, damaged pipes and introducing advanced technologies to guarantee efficient, equitable, and sustainable water distribution.”
CWC’s modernization work involves significant investment in new pipelines, reservoirs, and water management systems, designed to serve both the immediate needs of residents and the long-term demands of the island’s growing population. Sarsonas emphasized that the company is focused on ensuring every household, including those in remote areas, receives a consistent supply of clean water.
“We are committed to equal access for all Camiguin residents, regardless of their proximity to water sources,” Sarsonas said. “The infrastructure improvements are vital not just for preventing shortages but for enhancing the overall quality of service across the island.”
With the island facing growing water demand, aging infrastructure has posed serious risks to the sustainability of the water supply. CWC is now implementing advanced treatment and management systems to enhance the reliability and quality of the water distributed to households and businesses.
“The modernization of water treatment systems is just as crucial as the infrastructure itself,” Sarsonas noted. “We regularly conduct water quality testing to ensure that the water meets health and safety standards. By upgrading treatment facilities, we aim to protect the health of residents and prevent contamination issues that could arise from older, failing systems.”
Sarsonas also highlighted that CWC’s pricing structure reflects the necessary investments in infrastructure upgrades while remaining fair and competitive. “Our billing is based on actual water consumption, and we have made the process more accessible by introducing online payment options. The pricing reflects the cost of modernization, but these improvements will deliver long-term economic benefits, including a stable water supply and fewer service disruptions.”
He added that while some might question the costs associated with modernization, these investments are essential to prevent far more costly water shortages or health crises down the road.
In addition to the ongoing upgrades, CWC is also focused on expanding its service coverage to more remote areas of the island. Current projects include pipeline expansions and the construction of new reservoirs, all designed to ensure that every community has equal access to clean, reliable water.
