CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – The annual population growth rate (APGR) in Northern Mindanao is on a downtrend, the Commission on Population and Development in Northern Mindanao (CPD 10) announced on Friday, July 18.

In a “Talakayan sa PIA” forum, CPD 10 Regional Director Neil Aldrin Omega disclosed that the region had a population of 5.178 million in 2024 and that there were 156,000 more residents than in 2020 — posting an annual population growth rate (APGR) of 0.73 percent in the past four years.

In 2020, Region 10 had 5,022,768 population, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the APGR in the 2015-2020 census period was 1.46 percent. The APGR in 2010-2015 was 1.68 percent. PSA is set to release the results of a five-year Census of Population, 2020-2025, next year.

Omega said the slowing down of population growth as a “demographic window” for more public investments in education, health care, and job creations, making sure the aspirations of the young population are met.

He said roughly 68 percent of the country’s 112.7-million estimated population in 2024 is composed of 35 years old and below and the needs of this huge age-group must be responded to.

CPD which is focused on population management through formulation of policies, coordinating with other government agencies, and monitoring population programs. It is formerly known as Commission on Population (Popcom). (Uriel Quilinguing)
