ILIGAN CITY – The Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) organized the 7th Vendor’s Quiz here in celebration of Consumer Welfare Month to raise awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities.

The quiz was a platform for vendors to test their knowledge of the Consumer Act and market regulations. 

Maria Lourdes Tiongco, division chief of the Department of Trade and Industry-Lanao del Norte Consumer Protection Division, emphasized that through interactive quizzes and the incentive of prizes, participants were motivated to learn and understand the information about consumer rights and responsibilities. 

“Ato gyud ni gihimo, sa whole Region-10 nakita una nagpasugod diri sa Iligan. Kini ato gibuhat kay part sa mandate ang pagpahibalo sa katawhan unsay rights and responsibilities. Maghatag kami og reading materials sa ilaha, usahay mag-disseminate og information dili nila mabasa, pero kung naa sila ginalook forward nga quiz, prizes, ila jud basahon ug tun-an. Mao ni nga isa ni siya na paagi nato mapaabot ang information, dili lang sa mga eskwelahan, opisina, apil na sa merkado nga namaligya,” she said. 

(We really did this because, across the whole Region-10, it was first initiated here in Iligan. We did this because it is part of our mandate to inform the public about their rights and responsibilities. We provide reading materials for them; sometimes we disseminate information that they may not read, but when there is a quiz with prizes, they will surely read and learn. This is one way for us to reach people, not only in schools and offices but also in the markets.) 

Furthermore, she emphasized that the government, specifically the DTI, plays a crucial role in safeguarding consumers by educating them about their rights. She said that the quiz  not only excites participants but also teaches them important information they did not know, which helps protect them as consumers. 

Meanwhile, Maillen Galleto Adante won the quiz and received a P6,500 prize. She has been a vendor since 2018, selling eggs, oil, soy sauce, and spices; she also operates a carinderia at Tambo Public Market. She appreciated the opportunity to learn about the Consumer Act, solid waste management, and organic agriculture.

“Nagpasalamat ko sa LPCC nga nagpahigayon sa 7th Vendor’s Quiz. Nalipay ko nga makalearn  sa Consumer Act, sa solid waste management, kato  pud sa organic agriculture. Maayo gyud nga nakabalo sa mga balaod,” she said.  

(I am thankful to the LPCC for organizing the 7th Vendor’s Quiz. I am happy to have learned about the Consumer Act, solid waste management, and also about organic agriculture. It’s really good to be knowledgeable about the laws.)

She also plans to use her prize to invest in her business, treat her co-vendors, and support the studies of her 22-year-old daughter, who is studying nursing. (LELA/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)
