TheMonitorMindanaoToday.com | SDA Treasurer Shot Dead; Pastor Surrenders After Fatal Church Incident
A treasurer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church was shot and killed Thursday morning, November 6, near the church compound along Julio Pacana Street, Barangay Puntod, Cagayan de Oro City.
The victim, identified as Benjamin Mendez, was declared dead at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds — two in the back and two in his legs. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots shortly before authorities arrived.
Police identified the suspect as Pastor Chosen Gem Avista, who allegedly fled in a red vehicle after the incident but later surrendered to the Crime Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG-10) less than an hour later.
Investigators recovered eight empty shells at the crime scene. Authorities said the suspect used an unlicensed .45 caliber pistol, reportedly acquired amid a dispute within their church.
The victim’s son, Jediah Mendez, revealed that his father had been receiving death threats from the suspect and had previously filed a case against him. He also expressed confusion over how Avista was able to enter the premises despite being terminated from his post.
Seventh-day Adventist Church President Pastor Elvin Salarda said the victim was merely performing his duties as treasurer by reviewing financial reports and issuing memorandums for settlement.
“There was nothing personal in what he did. Our treasurer was only fulfilling his responsibility to ensure accountability in church finances,” Salarda said.
Authorities have confirmed that Avista will be facing a murder charge following his surrender and confession.
